Vice president of the CIC
Hello,
I was born in 1956 in Wolfsburg (Lower Saxony / Germany), and after taking my high-school diploma in Wolfsburg I studied laws and communication science in Göttingen. Afterwards I worked for some years in the IT department that serves the R&D division of the Volkswagen motor corporation.
|
In 1996, I was invited to Crete to create the legal framework of a franchise in the field of sports tourism. Just when that job was complete, the Internet came to Crete and since then I am again working in the IT environment with an emphasis in the Internet based workflow management.
Former CIC president Albert van Elst introduced me to join the community during an international X-mas party by the municipality of Rethymnon, and former vice president Anna Capernaros recruited me during the very next coach excursion.
Since then I participate in planning and organising our joint activities.
Dr. Philip Duke Ph.D.
I was born in 1953 in Liverpool and until my retirement in 2009 was a professor of anthropology at a liberal arts college in Durango, Colorado.
I studied archaeology at Cambridge University (B.A., M.A.) and the University of Calgary (M.A., Ph.D.) I have been a life-long Hellenophile, both teaching Greek archaeology and also conducting research on the island of Crete.
|
|
For many years my wife Donna and I led archaeological tours of Greece and the Greek islands. Donna and I moved to Crete in 2010 and spent five idyllic years there until impending grandchildren lured us back to the States.
Now, I write historical fiction. My first novel, A Terrible Unrest (2014), follows a fictional Cretan family to the coalfields of Colorado where they become embroiled in the Colorado Coalfield Wars of the early twentieth century and ultimately in the infamous Ludlow Massacre.
My second novel, The Village. A Novel of Wartime Crete (2019) follows the interlocking lives of a Cretan matriarch, her widowed son, a callow English soldier and a gung-ho German paratrooper in the first months of the German invasion and occupation of the island.
But as busy as I am I will always find time to watch my beloved Everton F.C. and fish in the trout streams of Colorado. Donna and I now live on five acres south of Durango with our two dogs, Missy P. (whom we brought over from Crete) and Lexi.
I was a member of CIC quite a few years ago, and I am grateful to Stuart Walsh, we were at school together and both support Everton, for inviting me to re-join the community, even if at long distance.

|
I like to travel and I joined the "CIC" after having participated in some coach excursions. Otherwise, I am interested in languages, play darts and still follow the German Bundesliga.

Willy Van Belleghem
Membership secretary of the CIC
Hi, I am Willy Van Belleghem, born on the 2nd of March 1947 in Bruges, Belgium, I lived for about 45 years in and nearby Antwerp and about 20 years in a smaller town called Sint-Niklaas about 20 km south of Antwerp.
My main profession was organising transport from and to the port of Antwerp. I dispatched containers, that came from Canada and the USA by truck to France and visa - versa.
I went to Greece on several occasions.
|
First I did a kaďki cruise to the Cyclades in 1976 with a week stay in Paros, these were my first impressions of Greece, the following year I did it again but this time we went to more islands with an other sort of boat with accomodation on board.
In 1986 I wen to Loutraki with my daughter and my ex-wife on the mainland and visited from there Korinthe. I came to Crete for the first time in 2006 in fact it was Albert Van Elst, our former president, who proposed me to come to Rethymno.
I stayed in Pension Olga in the old town and the second day got lost in the nice little streets. That was the moment I decided to come and live here.
I came back to Crete on several occasions and finaly stayed as from the 1st of may 2012. I have been a member since then and Membership Secretary since the 1st of april 2014.

I live in Skepasti with my wife Kathy and our two dogs who also made the long overland journey to Crete from the U.K. Moved to this wonderful island after many years of planning early in 2011 when I took early retirement, and then into our new home when it was completed during the middle of the following year.
I was invited to be Membership Secretary of the CIC in 2012 and took over as Secretary in 2013.
Originally from Liverpool I lived in Frodsham, Cheshire for the past 30 years or so.

Workwise I was in the motor industry spending many years as Regional Manager for Skoda GB and then Volkswagen UK. After that I was with some of the leading motor groups in a senior position covering brands as diverse as Bentley, Saab, Mitsubishi and Opel.
In my spare time I love to go walking, especially with our dogs very early in the mornings and photography. Sadly I no longer have my season ticket for Everton, but thanks to modern technology am able to stream all their matches live and enjoy the unique brand of football played by The School of Science!

I was born in Halfweg, a small village near to Amsterdam (also called Mokum). My wife was born in Amsterdam. Together we lived for some years in that great city.
From Amsterdam we moved to Hoofddorp. I had two professions: optician and tennis teacher.
In 2010 we reached the pensionable age. We decided to move to Crete because we both have the same feeling: Crete is our home.
|
We soon became members of the CIC. Later on I have been the president of the Community for some 4 ½ years, and afterwards I cared another year for its financial affairs.
